On April 16, Lighthouse staff and Board members (wearing many hats!) joined over 100 community members at Deakin Reserve to take part in the inaugural Under the Same Stars sleepout — in support for the 70+ young people in Greater Shepparton currently experiencing homelessness.
Hosted by The Salvation Army North East Youth Services, the overnight event offered a glimpse into life without stable housing. Guest speakers Jarvis Atkinson and Travis Wallace shared their own lived experiences giving insight into the harsh realities of homelessness—and the ripple effects of not having secure housing.
The event not only raised awareness of the challenges faced by young people each night — it also served as a valuable opportunity to connect. With local services, organisations, community leaders and changemakers in attendance, it became a space for sharing, collaboration, and strengthening the network of support for young people in our region.
Well done to The Salvation Army and Youth Services North East Victoria, especially Jim Gow, for bringing this event to life. Over $20,000 was raised, with every dollar staying local to support youth experiencing homelessness. Special thanks to Berry Street and the Youth Foyer Shepparton team for providing breakfast the next morning.
Youth Homelessness Matters Day falls on the third Wednesday of April each year. Future Under the Same Stars events will continue to coincide with this important date. To get involved, email jim.gow@salvationarmy.org.au
