Recently the Lighthouse team headed to Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative in Mooroopna to participate in their Cultural Tour. Led by Uncle Lance James and Aunty Cheryl Bourke, the tour provided the opportunity to learn about the history and traditions of local First Nations People.
The session covered the Cummeragunja walk-off and insights into life on the Flats and included a tour of one of the original houses built for residents moving off the Flats. Staff also learned about the incredible contributions of local First Nations artists, musicians and sports stars, along with the resilient and courageous leaders who fought tirelessly for Aboriginal rights.
Our visit was a fascinating, insightful and sometimes challenging reflection of our local history and a wonderful opportunity for the Lighthouse team to deepen their knowledge and understanding of community members who have called this land home for thousands of years.
A heartfelt thank you to Uncle Lance and Aunty Cheryl for generously sharing their knowledge and culture with us. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to engage in such meaningful dialogue and learning.
To honour this week’s NAIDOC celebrations we highly encourage other workplaces and schools to take the time and book a tour to experience this invaluable opportunity.
